Are you getting the most from your genealogy trip?
I see a lot of people traveling the wrong way -
people who are excited to travel to a new place that they know is related to their family history, but they:
❌ miss out on seeing specific family sites because they aren’t organized
❌ feel overwhelmed with all they need to see and do and fail to manage their time properly
❌ travel just for genealogy, without enjoying all the rest the destination has to offer
All of these mistakes come down to one thing: preparation.
Preparing for a genealogy trip is the most 👏🏼 important 👏🏼 part 👏🏼 of the whole experience!
If you don’t prepare and organize your research first, you are bound to miss something.
That’s why I created these travel pages: to make sure you never miss out on your family history.
Take a look at how the Ancestor page will help you organize information relating to the ancestor you are traveling to research:
✔️ Record all the specific places and addresses you’d like to visit on your trip related to this ancestor, and the significance of those places
✔️ List all the records you need to retrieve related to this ancestor from the local archives
✔️ Write down any outstanding questions you have about this ancestor or the circumstances of their life that could be answered on your trip
✔️ List all the records related to this ancestor that would be helpful to bring along for reference
And here is how the Cemeteries page will help you organize your graveyard research:
✔️ Record all the people buried in one cemetery to ensure you don’t miss any headstones
✔️ Take this page with you to the cemetery to record any inscriptions or notes
✔️ Couldn’t find a headstone? Record it so you don’t waste a poor Find A Grave contributor’s time by requesting a photo of a headstone that isn’t there! 😉
I came up with these pages for my own use.
On every genealogy trip, I would print out the records I would need to reference during my travels: censuses and land patents for addresses to visit, baptism records for church details, death certificates for addresses and cemetery records...
Sound familiar?
I started writing out details for each ancestor I wanted to focus on: all the addresses and places related to their lives, the records at the local archives I'd wanted to retrieve during my visit, and any outstanding questions I still had that could be answerable by local historians.
It was a lot to remember.
I would compile all this information, haphazardly written across multiple pieces of paper, until I realized I could make this easier for myself.
And so, voila, I created these printable pages to bring along with me on each trip, and now I want to share them with you!
